My GTI has 40k miles. I decided to go to the dealer for my oil change since my usual place has changed owners and I’m not impressed by how it’s running now. Bonus at the dealer: I need my DSG transmission service!
It is not cheap, $300 for the fluid change and inspections of the gears and control module. But I’m all for preventative maintenance, especially how I drive it.
I vaguely remember when I bought it that I realized that the service is more often but less costly than for a torque converter automatic, and over 100k miles the DSG was only about $100 more costly.
Now the first bill is due.

[Edit: By contrast, they wanted $40 to rotate my tires. Hard no. I’ll do it in a month and a half when my first autocross happens. Also $53 to change the cabin filter, a $30 (activated charcoal ) part and 5 minutes work. Also, no.]
[Edit 2: LOL, got the filter part number, and ECS sells a matching replacement charcoal lined cabin air filter for $16.]

This is a good data point. I surreptitiously shop GTIs online a lot lately. I haven’t driven either, but my heart says I would want the manual. My mind says I drive in Atlanta rush hour and need a DSG. Knowing the maintenance is “more” but not that outrageous is good.

I’m sure the service cost isn’t too bad considering the dealer cost for clutch replacement in a manual.

That service cost is great. The dual clutch in the Evo/ralliart costs that much for the raw fluid alone.

My friend's MK5 just hit 120k miles. Keep servicing the DSG in a timely manner and it should last a long time.

When I'm crawling through rush hour with 8 mph stop and go I am happy that I went with DSG. When I am on a mountain road or autocross, I miss the manual, but not much.

I have 2 manuals right now, but have only done track days with auto (new m3 & m5 - m3 is dsg and m5 is true auto i think?). I actually liked having the new autos, less to think about haha. But that was also my first and only track day, so....

That’s cheap for a dealer, some dealers charge $750 for it.

Oooh, nice two door MK7! I think I’ll go the dealer route too when mine hits 40k. Diy doesn’t seem that difficult, but I think I’d rather let them take care of it.

I’m hoping to find my original calculation from 3 years ago to see what costs I used. It does seem pretty good, other than the fact that it is $300 I hadn’t expected to spend today. I’ll update with the exact cost when it’s done.
Oil change cost is good, too, so I guess they make profit on tire rotations and cabin air filters?

I don’t like having to dispose of the old fluids if I DIY , plus I figure that it creates a service record that could help in the future for resale or warranty work.

Didn’t expect you to know. It was a rhetorical question.

The answer is probably though, since rotations are pure labor, and cabin air filters can be an annoyance to replace.

Yep - did my DSG service at 35k. Included a few other things, so it ended up being a rather expensive maintenance. Too bad the previous owner didn’t have Audicare.

$299. 95 plus tax for the DSG service. The service writer was shocked when I said I had heard $750 from you.

If I had known you were still there, I would have got you to ask how long an upper oil pan job takes. I’m certain the answer isn’t over 3 days.

No, I was gone by 3:45.
Oh boy. I wonder if my dealer would be doing any better job than yours.

Probably. The shop that found the leak told me good luck with the dealer, because they’ve dealt with them before on their Alltrack.

Having owned both 6sp manual and DSG GTIs, get the DSG. I bought it as a compromise after my wife had knee surgery and couldn’t drive a manual anymore and after a month or so realized that the DSG is superior in every way. Use the paddles and it’s every bit as engaging as a manual and has that perfect auto mode too. Best transmission I’ve ever driven.

I’m annoyed this morning as I looked more carefully at my bill and found that they also charged $28 in miscellaneous environmental fees not part of the service. Still overall a reasonable cost, but I need to clarify at some point that they don’t just slap this on every oil change.

Yup. My usual shop would have included that in the job cost on the bill.
